Friends of Wye Mill Partners with Cloverfields Preservation Foundation for the Future of Old Wye Mill

The Friends of Wye Mill (FOWM) is excited to announce a new partnership with Cloverfields Preservation Foundation (CPF) for the preservation and continued operation of the historic Old Wye Mill, located in Wye Mills, MD.

The collaboration between FOWM and CPF marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to preserve the Old Wye Mill, an important piece of Maryland's history. The mill, which dates back to the 17th century, stands as one of the oldest continuously operating water-powered grist mills in the United States. John Nizer, FOWM Project Manager and past president said “through this partnership, both organizations aim to uphold the Mill’s legacy while providing educational opportunities for visitors and the community”.

As part of the agreement, CPF will take ownership of the Mill and work alongside FOWM, which will continue its mission to operate the Mill as an active historical site. FOWM will focus on its core mission: to preserve, maintain, and interpret the mill’s history, technology, and cultural significance. The mill will remain a vital part of the community, offering educational programs and events that explore the unique history of milling technology, its role in the local economy, and the broader historical context of agriculture in Maryland.

“We are thrilled to partner with Cloverfields Preservation Foundation, whose commitment to preserving local history aligns with our mission,” said Brenda Davis, President of Friends of Wye Mill. “This partnership ensures the Old Wye Mill will be preserved for generations to come, continuing to serve as both a working grist mill and a place where visitors can connect with the past through hands-on experiences and interpretive programs.”

The Cloverfields Preservation Foundation, known for its dedication to preserving historical sites, will now serve as the steward of the Old Wye Mill property, safeguarding its long-term preservation. CPF’s leadership, combined with the expertise and passion of FOWM, will help elevate the Mill’s educational offerings while ensuring it remains a beacon of Maryland’s rich cultural history.

The Old Wye Mill will continue to be open to the public from May through October for tours, special events, and educational programs. As part of this partnership, FOWM and CPF will continue to develop new opportunities for visitors to explore the mill’s history and experience its operation firsthand.
